A moving, imaginative and thoughtful retelling of the graphic novels it features Tom Sturridge as the eponymous grumpy goth immortal, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as his sister Death and Boyd Holbrook as “The Corinthinan” – a serial killer with a difference. They said it was unfilmable but, with Neil Gaiman overseeing the adaptation of his surrealistic 1990s comic series, the adventures of Morpheus, Lord of Dreams have reached the screen. A spin-off reality show has been confirmed – a disturbing example of life imitating art. The shock factor is high – but the characters are compellingly drawn and the implicit criticism of the widening gulf between rich and poor earns parallels with Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite. There’s only one catch – put a foot wrong and a machine gun will take your arm off. These are presided over by guards dressed like refugees from Super Mario Brothers by way of Patrick McGoohan’s The Prisoner.

6/12/2023 0 Comments Adjustment daySick with all of our current ills and darkest, weirdest desires. What would happen is Adjustment Day, Palahniuk's newest novel. What if Tyler Durden, rather than being a small-time terrorist with dreams of changing the world but only local follow-through, had somehow managed to ignite the revolution that he'd actually intended? What if, rather than being hampered by secrecy (the first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club), it leveraged social media and the listicle obsessions of the internet? Bigger in every conceivable way there is to be bigger. So my question is, what would happen if Fight Club were bigger? Bigger in scope. It was a bloody, furious, satirical takedown of the men's movement, self-help groups, slacker culture and consumerism. You remember Fight Club, right? It was Chuck Palahniuk's first novel - a kind of anti- Generation X that just happened to hit (no pun intended) at the perfect moment in time (1996), skewering the perfect targets to the perfect depth. The protagonists are fierce, independent, and usually anomalous to the social system in which they find themselves. This is a representative example of a trend in sci-fi fiction propelled by the success of The Hunger Games and Divergent series in which a young or youngish protagonist struggles to understand and survive in a dysfunctional society. Last week I placed on the shelf in mass market a tome called Grimspace by Anne Aguirre. One is in the mass market paperback room, one is the hardcover fiction room, and one is in the children’s section on the young teen shelf. There are three places at Orphans Treasure Box where you can find books of science fiction. They often seek him out looking for justice, and if there is a murderer to be caught, he wades right in. He’s a good cook, has a girlfriend he describes as his “destiny” (aww!), and he sees dead people. Odd Thomas is a 20-year-old fry cook who lives in a small desert town in California. Let’s start with a quick summary of the book Odd Thomas: I ended up really liking this novel, although the ending made me cry, dang it! While Odd Thomas did have some creepy parts, it wasn’t the relentless, under-your-skin creepiness that I avoid at all costs, and it was tempered with very likable characters. Odd Thomas caught my eye because it looked more quirky than creepy, plus I’ve never read anything by Dean Koontz and I wanted to see why he’s so popular. In line with the 12 Months of Reading Goodness challenge, October is the month to read a book with a supernatural or paranormal theme. (This in no way affects the honesty of my reviews!) Odd Thomas is the first book in the popular paranormal / horror series written by Dean Koontz. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Book the vacationersThe Mediterranean sun is a bit more powerful than the LA sun! Upon completion of the book, I am dying to return to the island and perhaps run into a famous Spanish tennis player of my own!īelow are some questions to spark a conversation about the novel. And even though I have visited beautiful Mallorca, it was years ago and all I did was lie on the beach and get burned to a crisp. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and watching the drama that unfolded on their vacation. In any case, what did you think? Personally, I found the book to be a lovely escape from reality. So, how did you do? Were you able to finish reading the book in its entirety? I introduced the book by calling it the perfect beach read and we held our own Freutcake Book Club meeting on the beach, but perhaps you indulged in a different way – under the covers, while waiting at the doctor’s office, or in between class or work breaks. As July comes to a close, we are wrapping up our discussion of this month’s book club selection, The Vacationers by Emma Straub. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Console Wars by Blake J. HarrisThe battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Following the success of The Accidental Billionaires and Moneyball comes Console Wars-a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Eeny Up Above by Jane YolenBut, as their father's story comes to an end, they know that through his memories, they will always return.Ī Palestinian family celebrates the stories of their homeland in this moving autobiographical picture book debut by Hannah Moushabeck. WilsonI LOVED the various plot twists and turns in this book. Not necessarily a “happy ending”, but the fitting ending the series deserved. It did the rest of the series justice and closed the story in a way that I felt good about. What I loved about this story: The circle is closed!Īfter years of reading these great books, I was happy to finally reach the end and receive that satisfying conclusion to the story. With no time left on the clock, General Rommond is forced to make an audacious plan: finish the construction of the Hometaker on the move, driving straight towards the enemy, who have assembled in unimaginable force. The Resistance races against time to complete the missile-launcher known as the Hometaker, capable of opening a gateway to the land the Regime came from, and exposing the Iron Emperor for all the evils he has done.Įverything rests on the secrecy of the mission, but from day one tongues are wagging. I’ve read the books since the beginning, and I’m thrilled to have closure to the story of Jacob, Whistler, Rommond, and all the others. Today, for Book Review Wednesday, I have a book I’ve been looking forward to: the FINAL book in The Great Iron War series by Dean Wilson. 6/10/2023 0 Comments Terminal boredom reviewPlease allow 1-3 weeks for your book(s) to arrive.
